Grand Isle, VT — September 16 — Members of the Grand Isle Volunteer Fire Department participated in training focused on responding to chimney fires as the weather turned cooler and residents began using their fireplaces and wood stoves.

During the training, firefighters practiced using ground ladders and roof ladders that are typically deployed during chimney fire situations. They also reviewed the department’s response procedures and worked through different scenarios to better understand the steps involved in handling such incidents.

The session allowed firefighters to revisit important aspects like ladder positioning, equipment handling, and the proper procedures for safely operating near homes. Regular drills are essential for maintaining and sharpening the skills needed to respond effectively during emergencies that may require teamwork both on the ground and on the roof.

Chimney fires continue to be a significant concern during Vermont’s heating season. According to the Vermont Division of Fire Safety, the failure to remove creosote from chimneys used with solid-fuel heating devices is a major cause of home heating fires. The state recommends that chimneys and wood stoves be inspected and cleaned annually by a certified professional.

The training helped the department prepare for seasonal calls related to residential heating systems. By reviewing equipment, procedures, and response situations, Grand Isle firefighters aimed to stay prepared for chimney fire incidents throughout the colder months.
