Wells River, Vt. — October 15 — Firefighters from the Wells River, Groton, and Ryegate fire departments visited Blue Mountain Union School on October 15 to instruct students on fire prevention, emergency response, and home fire safety.
Students investigated fire apparatus, engaged in hands-on activities, and watched demonstrations inside the Vermont State Fire Safety Trailer. Firefighters showed off their protective gear and clarified that turnout gear and breathing apparatus alter a firefighter's appearance and voice during emergencies. Students were reminded that firefighters wear this equipment to protect themselves while helping people in danger.
The visit included instruction on lithium-ion battery safety, an important topic as rechargeable batteries are used in phones, tablets, laptops and other everyday devices. Students learned to use manufacturer-approved chargers, avoid charging devices on beds or couches, and keep batteries away from heat and flammable materials. Damaged, swollen or overheating batteries should not be used. If a battery begins smoking or catches fire, people should move away, evacuate if needed and call 911.
Firefighters also reviewed home escape planning. Families should maintain working smoke alarms on every level of the home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas, and test them monthly. Students were encouraged to identify two ways out of each room when possible, choose an outdoor meeting place and practice their escape plan at least twice a year.
