Pomona, NY - Firefighter recruits in Rockland County underwent rigorous, high-stakes survival training on Tuesday evening, focusing on wall breaching techniques and self-rescue maneuvers designed to save lives when interior conditions turn hostile.

On September 29, 2026, instructor staff with Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services led the recruit class through hands-on survival evolutions at the county training center. The curriculum centered on critical firefighter self-survival protocols, specifically teaching recruits how to force their way through interior drywall, lath, and wall studs to escape sudden structural collapses, flashovers, or rapid fire cutoffs.

The recruits also practiced hazardous disentanglement drills, learning to free themselves, their protective turnouts, and their self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) from fallen wire bundles and tight framing obstructions in simulated zero-visibility environments.

Training coordinators emphasized that while the goal is for firefighters to never encounter a catastrophic trapped-member scenario, mastering instinctual wall-breaching and self-extrication maneuvers provides new personnel with the vital skills needed to survive when seconds dictate the outcome on the fireground.
