Charlton, NY - Volunteer firefighters from the West Charlton and Harmony fire departments pushed into intense thermal conditions Tuesday, enduring temperatures approaching 1,200°F during realistic live-fire training evolutions at the Saratoga County fire training facility.

On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, members of the West Charlton Fire Department (WCFD) and Harmony Corners Fire Department (HCFD) assembled at the county burn building behind the Saratoga County Animal Shelter. Guided by professional state-certified instructors from Calderwood Training, the joint exercise provided newer members their first controlled interior fire exposure while allowing experienced Class A interior firefighters to fulfill their mandatory annual OSHA respiratory protection and SCBA competencies.

Instructors ignited Class A fuel loads—composed of wooden pallets and straw—within the structure's lower level to replicate the heavy smoke, flashover potential, and rapid thermal lift of an active residential structure fire. Operating in synchronized attack teams, firefighters advanced charged hose lines into the building under the direct supervision of instructors who demonstrated flow-path dynamics, rapid nozzle techniques for high-heat knockdowns, and thermal balance management.

Crews also drilled extensively with thermal imaging cameras (TICs) to identify hidden fire running within wall voids and locate victim heat signatures through zero-visibility conditions.

Thermal sensors inside the burn chamber recorded peak localized temperatures near 1,200°F, with firefighters operating handlines just feet away in ambient heat exceeding 700°F. Officers praised the high-level instruction and noted that joint drills between West Charlton and Harmony continue to strengthen operational unity across shared district boundaries.
