Providence, R.I. — October 1 — Members of the Providence Fire Department participated in practical training sessions that focused on the use of ventilation saws and vertical ventilation techniques. These skills are essential for firefighters during structural firefighting operations.

Vertical ventilation involves creating an opening in the roof of a burning structure to allow heat and smoke to escape.

When this method is properly planned and synchronized with fire suppression activities, it can significantly enhance the environment inside the building and assist in locating and rescuing people.

During the training, firefighters practiced operating ventilation saws and reviewed the procedures necessary for conducting roof operations.

The task required careful use of tools, awareness of the roof's condition, and effective communication among team members.

This type of ventilation also needed close coordination with the interior firefighting crews.

Opening the roof without adequate fire suppression measures could lead to increased fire spread by allowing more air to reach the flames. Therefore, firefighters had to evaluate fire conditions, wind direction, building structure, and the safety of personnel both on the roof and inside the building.

The Providence Fire Department has a Division of Training and Professional Development that supports the continuous improvement of firefighter skills and ensures they are prepared for various operational demands.

The department is responsible for responding to fires, technical rescues, and other emergency situations within the city.

The training emphasized the value of ongoing practice for complex tasks performed at fire scenes.

It helped firefighters become more proficient with their equipment, work effectively as a team, and be ready to handle unexpected situations during emergency incidents.
