South Burlington, VT — September 22 — Members of the South Burlington Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department recently participated in training focused on firefighter bailout techniques. During the session, they practiced emergency escape procedures that could be used when conditions inside a building become too dangerous for standard exits.

A bailout is a quick method of exiting a structure when firefighters encounter immediate danger and cannot safely use normal exit routes.

These techniques may require specialized tools and careful movement through a window or another opening. Regular training helps firefighters become familiar with their equipment and enables them to react swiftly in the event of an emergency escape situation.

Bailout scenarios are rare but highly dangerous. While firefighters hope to never need these skills during a real incident, training ensures that crews are prepared for unexpected changes in fire behavior, structural risks, or other hazards within a building.

The training was conducted at a facility provided by the Shelburne Fire Department, which offered a dedicated environment for practice. The South Burlington Fire and EMS Department expressed its gratitude to Shelburne Fire for allowing access to their training site.

This exercise reinforced the department’s commitment to firefighter safety, preparedness, and the development of practical skills.

Vermont’s Division of Fire Safety also highlighted the importance of ongoing training as a requirement for maintaining firefighter certification, including routine instruction in structural firefighting and the proper use of equipment.

The South Burlington Fire and EMS Department operates two stations and delivers emergency response services to the local community. Continuous training ensures that personnel are ready to handle the various challenges they might face in the field.
