Castine, Maine — October 7, 2026 — Castine Fire Rescue Department is training about 20 new probationary firefighters as part of its fall training program. Most of the new members are students at Maine Maritime Academy.

During the first few weeks, recruits learned how to use their turnout gear, search for victims in a smoke-filled environment while wearing self-contained breathing apparatus ( SCBA), and force doors and windows during hands-on exercises. The training included use of a training trailer provided by the Maine Fire Service Institute.

The weekly Wednesday night sessions are led by the department’s training cadre, with experienced firefighters teaching new members while continuing to develop their own skills.
