Raymond, ME — September 21 — Captain Jordan and Lieutenant Gillies from Raymond Fire & Rescue recently completed a week-long certification course in rescue swimmer and instructor training, which is a significant development for the department's water rescue training program.
The course was highly demanding, with about 10 hours of instruction each day. It equipped both officers with the knowledge and skills needed to teach other department members rescue swimmer techniques and assist them in obtaining the same level of certification.
With their new qualifications, Captain Jordan and Lieutenant Gillies are now expected to conduct future training sessions, share their expertise, and evaluate other members as they work toward certification. Taking on this instructor role will help the department develop its internal training capabilities and ensure that water rescue operations meet consistent, high standards.
Rescue swimmer training emphasizes the skills required to locate and assist individuals in the water while managing risks for both the rescuer and the person being rescued. These operations demand strong swimming ability, good decision-making, effective communication, and teamwork with other emergency responders.
Raymond Fire & Rescue has consistently highlighted the value of continuous training in its annual reports.
The new instructor certifications support the department's goal of preparing its staff to handle water-related emergencies.
By training and certifying more members locally, the department can enhance its preparedness and preserve these specialized skills in the long term.
