Colchester, VT — September 14 — Members of the Colchester Fire Department and Saint Michael’s College Fire and Rescue participated in hands-on roof ventilation training at the former Porters Point School on September 14. The building, which was set to be demolished after the new school was completed, offered firefighters a chance to practice fireground techniques using real construction materials.

During the training, firefighters practiced various roof ventilation techniques and used different tools to cut and open parts of the roof. This session gave them valuable experience with tasks that are hard to replicate during standard station exercises.

Roof ventilation plays an important role in helping firefighters control smoke, heat, and harmful gases during a fire.

These operations need to be closely coordinated with interior attack teams and incident commanders because opening a roof can alter airflow and influence how the fire behaves. Safety also relies on assessing roof conditions, using appropriate protective gear, and following proper procedures.

Training on a repurposed structure allowed firefighters to work in conditions similar to those encountered in real emergencies, while still operating in a controlled environment. The exercise also strengthened collaboration between Colchester Fire Department and Saint Michael’s College Fire and Rescue.

The Colchester Fire Department regularly conducts training to ensure they are prepared and to enhance coordination with other agencies. The department offers fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical first-response services to the local community.

Local officials valued the opportunity to use the former school for practical training before its demolition was completed.
