Burlington, VT — October 12 — Members of the Burlington Fire Department participated in a department-wide training session focused on a new roof-rope rescue system. This training aimed to enhance their capability to handle emergencies where individuals needed to be safely moved from rooftops or other difficult-to-access locations.

The instruction was led by firefighters who had previously completed a train-the-trainer program during the summer. After gaining proficiency with the new system, these firefighters trained other crews throughout the department to ensure everyone understood how to use the equipment and perform the necessary rescue techniques effectively.

According to a local report by WCAX, Burlington firefighters attended a two-day training course in July, led by a rescue team from New York. The system was specifically designed to assist crews in rescuing people from buildings when traditional aerial ladders were unable to reach the required height or location.

This training was part of the department’s broader technical rescue program, which also covered topics such as rope systems, equipment selection, patient movement, and both high- and low-angle rescue techniques. Burlington’s Tower 1, Ladder 2, and Ladder 4 were expected to be equipped with the necessary tools for these specialized operations.

Routine practice allowed firefighters to refine their skills, uncover errors in a safe environment, and develop confidence before facing real-life emergencies. The department also intended to continue practicing these techniques to remain prepared and efficient in emergency situations.
