Four Square, Fire Trucks and K-9 Kye: Safety Day at CTES

PROCTORSVILLE, Vt. — September 18, 2026 — Students at Cavendish Town Elementary School took part in Safety Day 2026, a hands-on educational program featuring local firefighters, emergency medical services personnel and law enforcement. The event provided students with opportunities to learn about emergency response, fire safety, vehicle rescue and the people who serve their community.

The Proctorsville Volunteer Fire Department hosted the annual program, continuing a tradition that has introduced students to fire safety and emergency services for more than 15 years.

The day began with firefighters greeting students as they arrived at school. Fire Chief Glidden and Firefighter Terry also joined students for a few games of four square, giving the firefighters a chance to test their skills against the students.

Following school announcements and the Pledge of Allegiance, students walked to the firehouse for a vehicle extrication demonstration. Firefighters showed how emergency crews use specialized tools and equipment to remove a person from a damaged vehicle. Ludlow Fire Chief Whalen and staff from Ludlow Ambulance supported the demonstration, which included Cavendish Town Elementary School secretary Donna Hamilton acting as the crash victim.

After the demonstration, students had the opportunity to ask questions of fire and EMS personnel about emergency response, rescue equipment and the work involved in helping people during an emergency.

The Windsor County Sheriff's Department also took part in the program. Deputy Jackson Howe and K-9 Kye demonstrated the dog's tracking and search abilities. Students watched as Kye located items during the demonstration, providing an introduction to the work law enforcement K-9 teams perform in the field. The department's participation also gave students an opportunity to learn about police work and the role specially trained dogs play in public safety.
