Tiverton, R.I. — October 3 — Eight firefighters from the Tiverton Fire Department took part in hands-on vehicle extrication training organized by the National Auto Body Council’s First Responder Emergency Extrication (F.R.E.E.) program.

During the session, firefighters had the chance to work on newer-model vehicles and learn about changes in how modern vehicles are designed and built. The training covered topics like high-strength metals, airbags, restraint systems, and the challenges presented by electric and hybrid vehicles.

The materials used in modern vehicles and their advanced safety features can influence how rescue teams access trapped individuals following a crash. High-strength steel may require different cutting techniques, and it’s important for firefighters to identify airbags and other components before starting extrication work.

The training allowed participants to practice various techniques on real vehicles in a controlled environment. This experience helped the crews understand how vehicle construction affects tool selection, cutting locations, and rescue strategies during an emergency.

The National Auto Body Council’s F.R.E.E. program offers first responders education and practical experience related to newer vehicles, advanced safety systems, and alternative-fuel technologies. This program helps emergency personnel prepare for rescue situations that may differ from those involving older vehicle models.

The Tiverton Fire Department expressed gratitude to the National Auto Body Council, Advanced Remarketing Services, Municipal Emergency Services (MES), Manheim Auctions, and all those who helped organize and support the training. The session emphasized the importance of ongoing hands-on practice as vehicle technology continues to evolve.
