Tiverton, R.I. —September 26 — Two firefighters from the Tiverton Fire Department finished a week-long Rescue Swimmer Course organized by the Charlestown Ambulance Rescue Service. The training included instruction on water rescue techniques suitable for various environments, such as surf areas, rocky coastlines, boat and shore rescues, and situations involving flooding or fast-moving water.
This course provided firefighters with hands-on experience in rescue scenarios that often require advanced swimming abilities and the capacity to function in unpredictable water conditions. These types of situations can be complex for emergency personnel, which underscores the importance of consistent training and teamwork in preparing for water-based rescues.
Rescue swimmer tasks may include reaching individuals in danger, working alongside teams on the shore, and coordinating with other emergency units. Training allows rescuers to practice their procedures, learn how to use specialized equipment, and become ready for the dangers associated with water-related emergencies.
With these two firefighters now certified, the Tiverton Fire Department has raised its total number of certified rescue swimmers to 11. This increase in trained staff enhances the department’s ability to respond effectively to water-related incidents.
The department expressed appreciation to the Charlestown Ambulance Rescue Service for hosting the course and offering the training opportunity. The collaborative training also helped to improve communication and cooperation between different emergency services.
The course represents an important milestone in Tiverton’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a well-trained workforce capable of handling emergencies in both land and water environments. Regular practice ensures that rescue teams stay skilled and prepared for various water conditions that may arise.
