Greene, R.I. — October 8 — The Western Coventry Fire Department observed National Fire Prevention Week by urging residents to examine their home fire safety routines and take actions to shield their families and local community.
The department pointed out several fundamental steps, such as checking smoke alarms, creating a home escape plan, and maintaining cleanliness in cooking zones. They also reminded people to remain in the kitchen while cooking and not leave cooking appliances unattended.
Smoke alarms must be placed inside each bedroom, outside sleeping spaces, and on all floors of the home. Regularly testing these alarms ensures they are functioning correctly. Families should also determine two exit routes from each room, choose a safe outdoor meeting spot, and practice their escape plan as a group.
The department emphasized the value of clearly visible house numbers. Easy-to-see numbers on homes and mailboxes can assist emergency responders in accurately identifying a property during an incident.
Fire prevention continues to play a key role in community safety. By adhering to simple safety measures and reviewing emergency plans, residents can help lower fire risks and enhance their readiness at home.
The Western Coventry Fire Department urged community members to make fire safety a consistent part of their household habits and collaborate in building a safer neighborhood.
