Caribou, ME — September 15 — Members of the Caribou Fire & Ambulance Department participated in hands-on vehicle extrication training at Mark’s Towing Service. They used available vehicles to practice techniques for safely reaching patients who are trapped in damaged cars.
The training emphasized practicing various rescue methods and becoming familiar with the tools and equipment typically used during motor vehicle incidents. Each crash can present unique challenges, so firefighters must assess the scene, identify potential hazards, and choose the most appropriate methods to access a patient.
Vehicle extrication often involves stabilizing the damaged vehicle, managing potential dangers, and creating a safe path for rescue personnel. Depending on the situation, crews may use manual tools or powered rescue equipment to open doors, dismantle parts of the vehicle, and assist in preparing a patient for removal.
Regular practical exercises help firefighters keep their skills sharp, improve their handling of equipment, and work effectively as a team during rescue operations. These trainings also allow crews to practice decision-making and adjust their techniques based on different vehicle conditions.
The department expressed appreciation to Mark’s Towing Service for providing continued access to its facility and vehicles for training. Practicing with vehicles in a controlled environment allowed members to refine rescue techniques and gain valuable hands-on experience.
This session supported the department’s ongoing commitment to maintaining readiness and preparing its paid-call firefighters for the diverse situations they may encounter during vehicle rescue operations.
