South Ryegate, VT — September 25 — The Ryegate Municipal Fire Department worked with the Groton Fire Department to conduct a practical training session on pump operations, focusing on water delivery and coordination between the two neighboring departments.
During the training, firefighters used pumping equipment and transported water as part of hands-on learning. The session allowed the firefighters to collaborate, become familiar with each department’s equipment, and review the procedures followed during joint emergency responses.
Both departments have agreed to conduct regular joint training to enhance their ability to serve their communities. Practicing together helped firefighters better understand how mutual aid resources function and how crews can coordinate their efforts during incidents that require support from multiple departments.
Pump training is a key component of fire service preparedness. Firefighters need to understand pump controls, water supply connections, hose operations, and pressure management to ensure a reliable water supply during fire suppression. Vermont’s Fire Academy also includes pump operations, water supply practices, and relay pumping in its driver-operator training program.
For departments that serve rural areas, effective water delivery and coordination between responding units are especially crucial when water sources are limited or additional apparatus are needed.
The joint session highlighted the importance of practical training and collaboration. By continuing to train together, Ryegate and Groton firefighters aim to improve communication, equipment knowledge, and operational coordination during future mutual aid responses.
