Winhall, VT — September 22 — The Winhall Fire Department held a training session on Tuesday, which focused on testing firefighter air packs, commonly referred to as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). This activity was part of the department’s continuous efforts to ensure that all equipment is in good working condition and that firefighters are well-prepared for emergencies requiring respiratory protection.

These air packs provide firefighters with breathable air when operating in environments filled with smoke or other hazardous conditions. Routine inspections and testing help find any equipment issues before an emergency occurs, allowing for timely repairs or replacements.

During SCBA checks, firefighters examine various components, including the harness, facepiece, hoses, air cylinder, regulators, and warning systems.

They also verify that the equipment functions properly and that the air supply system maintains the required pressure as specified by the manufacturer.Any damaged or unsafe equipment is taken out of service and sent for proper repair.

The National Fire Protection Association has established standards for the inspection, care, and maintenance of firefighting equipment, including SCBA.

Following these guidelines helps departments keep their protective gear reliable and supports the safety of firefighters during high-risk operations.

For the Winhall Fire Department, the air pack testing session emphasized the value of regular equipment checks as part of routine training.

It reinforced the responsibility of fire service personnel to ensure their breathing equipment is always in working order.

Consistent testing and maintenance of firefighting equipment help ensure that firefighters are better equipped and ready to use their protective gear when responding to emergency calls.
