Laying the Line, Establishing Water, Monitoring Vitals: Inside Vista’s Cross-Discipline Drill

Vista, NY - Volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel from the Vista Fire Department joined forces for an intensive Monday night drill focused entirely on "Initial Structure Fire Tasks," refining the coordinated actions required during the opening minutes of a working fire.

On September 28, 2026, Vista members walked through the sequence of mission-critical tasks that dictate fireground success before second-alarm and mutual aid resources arrive. Fire personnel reviewed 360-degree scene size-up, strategic apparatus positioning to preserve truck company access, rapid water supply connections, attack hoseline deployments, pump discharge hydraulics, tactical radio discipline, and initial interior fire attack coordination.

Crews also practiced prioritizing incoming unit assignments as conditions evolve, including primary search-and-rescue sweeps, fireground personnel accountability, vertical and horizontal ventilation, and continuous structural situational awareness.

Operating in tandem, Vista EMS personnel drilled on their critical fireground support mandates. Medics established firefighter rehabilitation sectors, ran medical monitoring protocols—tracking vitals and hydration to prevent heat stress and cardiac events—and staged triage equipment to handle potential civilian rescues or member injuries.

Because the Vista Fire Department delivers unified fire and emergency medical services, joint drills ensure that engine crews, truck personnel, and medical providers function as a single unit under pressure.
