Oneco, Conn. — September 25, 2026 — The Oneco Fire Department introduced Fire Lieutenant Henry Dexter in the first installment of its new monthly Member Spotlight series, created to help residents get to know the volunteers who serve their community.

Dexter joined the department in 2007. He said his decision to volunteer was driven by a desire to help people and the example of family members who served in fire departments elsewhere.

Outside the fire service, Dexter works for the Plainfield Highway Department and owns Dexter Property Maintenance. Within the department, he describes himself as a versatile member who can take on a range of tasks. His favorite apparatus is Rescue 368.

One of Dexter’s most memorable moments at the firehouse was marching with his family in the VJ Day Parade. He credited his father, his cousin Andrew and his uncle Skip as people who inspired him to become a firefighter.

When asked what keeps him returning year after year, Dexter pointed to the satisfaction of helping people during difficult moments. He also encouraged anyone considering volunteering to understand the commitment involved.

His advice to younger generations was straightforward: “ You get what you put into it.” Dexter said volunteering can bring a sense of happiness and relief when someone expresses thanks for the help they received. The department thanked Dexter for his years of service and recognized him as a valued member of Station 68. The new spotlight series is intended to highlight more members in future monthly posts.
