West Greenwich, RI — September 16 — Members of the Lake Mishnock Fire/Rescue Department participated in a training session focused on building systems at the Residence Inn. The training included topics such as fire alarm systems, standpipe operations, and handling elevator emergencies. This allowed newer members to gain a better understanding of the equipment and systems they might come across during emergency situations.

Firefighters often face specific challenges when responding to incidents at hotel buildings. Fire alarm systems are essential for alerting both building occupants and emergency crews about potential threats. Standpipe systems, on the other hand, provide necessary water connections for firefighting in larger structures. Being familiar with how these systems function enables fire crews to better plan their approach and choose the appropriate tools for the situation.

Elevator emergencies also demand a clear understanding of building controls, safety mechanisms, and procedures for rescuing individuals who are trapped. The training helped firefighters review the proper way to collaborate with building staff and follow established safety protocols during such incidents.

The session provided newer firefighters with hands-on knowledge of the systems commonly found in both commercial and residential buildings. Having a good grasp of a building’s layout and features before an emergency can assist crews in quickly locating essential equipment, identifying access points, and performing more efficiently upon arrival.

The department expressed appreciation to the Residence Inn staff for their support and cooperation in making the training session possible. These opportunities to train within buildings that the department serves help firefighters develop a deeper local knowledge and better prepare for a variety of emergency calls.

This exercise contributed to the ongoing efforts of the Lake Mishnock Fire/Rescue Department to ensure preparedness through practical training and partnerships with local businesses.
