Readsboro, VT — September 21 — The Readsboro Fire Department held water supply training at Sherman Pond, involving Engines 92-E2 and 92-E3.The training focused on drafting operations and the use of a newly installed air primer on Engine 92-E3.

During the exercise, firefighters used Engine 92-E3 to draw water from the pond. Drafting involves using the engine’s suction hose to pull water from a natural source into the pump system. This technique is essential for rural fire departments, especially in areas where fire hydrants are not easily accessible.

The training also allowed firefighters to work with the new air primer, helping them understand how it functions. The primer is used to eliminate air from the pump and suction line, creating the necessary vacuum to lift water from the source.

Regular practice with drafting helps firefighters stay proficient in setting up suction lines, operating pump systems, and ensuring a consistent water supply. These skills are crucial during fire incidents that require a steady flow of water.

Engine 92-E3 is the department’s newer unit, which became operational in December 2025 after completing equipment preparation, pump training, and driver training.

The training at Sherman Pond reinforced the department’s commitment to maintaining equipment readiness and enhancing water supply capabilities for emergency responses in Readsboro and nearby mutual-aid areas.
