This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Pownal, VT — September 24, 2026 — The Pownal Fire Department and Pownal Valley Fire Department helped the Pownal Rescue Squad remove a patient who had fallen through a floor into a basement. More firefighters were called in from the Bennington Rural Fire Department and Williamstown Fire District in Massachusetts to assist with the rescue and managing traffic at the scene.

The situation required teamwork between fire and emergency medical services crews to reach the patient and support the removal process. Firefighters worked with rescue workers to help take the patient out of the basement while ensuring a safe environment for the responders.

Rescuing someone from a basement can be difficult for emergency crews because access might be limited by stairs, narrow doors, and the way the building is constructed. When a person falls through a floor, responders also need to check the condition of the floor and the surrounding structure before moving the patient. These factors can influence how the crew accesses the patient and plans for their safe removal.

Calling in additional personnel helped with the rescue operation and managing the traffic around the scene.

Mutual-aid responses allow fire departments to share staff and resources when an incident needs a coordinated effort.

The Pownal Rescue Squad provides emergency medical services in Pownal and collaborates with nearby agencies when extra help is required. This response highlighted the importance of cooperation between fire and emergency medical personnel during a patient removal situation.
