West Carthage, NY - Volunteer firefighters from the West Carthage Fire Department dedicated Thursday afternoon to an intensive auto extrication training session, sharpening critical technical rescue tactics to ensure operational readiness for severe motor vehicle collisions in Jefferson County.
On September 24, 2026, department personnel ran hands-on, scenario-based drills simulating complex vehicle entrapment incidents. Firefighters reviewed and executed each phase of modern vehicle rescue, beginning with foundational stabilization using box cribbing and step chocks to secure compromised passenger compartments.
Crews systematically worked through essential scene-safety protocols, including 12-volt battery power isolation to eliminate accidental airbag deployment and fire hazards, controlled glass management to safeguard simulated patients, and the tactical deployment of heavy hydraulic rescue tools.
Responders operated cutters, spreaders, and rams to practice door displacement, roof removals, and dash rolls, reinforcing the situational awareness and coordinated teamwork required to extract motorists safely and rapidly under real-world emergency conditions.
