Copake, NY - Volunteer firefighters from Copake Fire Company 1 dedicated their Tuesday evening training session to mastering ground ladder fundamentals, focusing on rapid deployment, tactical placement, and elevated operational safety in Columbia County.

On September 23, 2026, department personnel ran hands-on drills aimed at sharpening muscle memory and efficiency when raising and operating off ground ladders.

Training officers underscored that fast and precise ladder placement is critical during structural fires, where seconds dictate whether trapped civilians or distressed interior crews have a viable emergency secondary egress point.

During the practical evolutions, members practiced apparatus retrieval, sizing up target windows, and throwing ground ladders tailored specifically for hydraulic ventilation access versus emergency rescue profiles.

Firefighters also practiced working comfortably at height, drilling on ladder locking techniques—such as executing proper leg locks—to free their hands for tool operations, forcible entry, and window clearing.

The comprehensive session reinforced core truck-company fundamentals, ensuring responders maintain split-second readiness on the fireground.
