Copake, NY - Volunteer firefighters from Copake Fire Company 1 took to their department training tower on a misty Sunday morning to execute intensive, high-angle bailout evolutions as part of their annual Mayday and firefighter survival training in Columbia County.
On September 20, 2026, interior-qualified firefighters participated in realistic, high-stress drills simulating a rapid exit from a deteriorating structural fire. Staged on the third floor of the department's training tower, each participant was required to call a formal Mayday transmission over the radio, deliver precise situational reporting regarding their exact location and tactical problem, and activate their personal PASS (Personal Alert Safety System) alarm.
Under simulated extreme emergency conditions, members then had to maintain situational awareness, manually rig and anchor their personal self-belay bailout escape systems, and execute an emergency rappel out of a third-story window to reach the ground safely.
Responders completed multiple successive evolutions throughout the morning to reinforce rapid deployment skills, critical communications, and the split-second muscle memory required to survive catastrophic fireground entrapments.
