Pittsford, NY — September 14 — Members of the Pittsford Fire Department carried out hands-on saw training at an old shed that was made available by Rayson Miller Post 899 prior to its demolition, which was necessary to make way for a new structure.

The local veterans group permitted the firefighters to use the building for practical training, offering the crews a chance to work with saws on a real structure. Access to buildings that are going to be demolished offers valuable experience that is hard to fully recreate in a classroom.

Saw operations are a key part of fire and rescue work. Depending on the situation, firefighters may need to cut through wood, roofing, or other building materials to gain entry, create openings, or support other emergency efforts. These tasks demand proper tool handling, awareness of potential dangers, and teamwork among crew members.

Training on a real structure also lets firefighters observe how materials behave during cutting and how to safely work in the area. Practicing repeatedly helps members get more comfortable with their equipment and review procedures before responding to emergencies.

The Pittsford Fire Department expressed gratitude to Rayson Miller Post 899 for providing the training opportunity and supporting local emergency responders. The organization’s support made it possible to carry out this practical exercise while the old shed was being prepared for demolition.

Collaboration between community groups and fire departments can offer important training experiences and help firefighters keep their skills sharp.
