Cazenovia, NY — September 26 — Ten members of the Cazenovia Fire Department recently completed the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) Surface Water Rescue Technician course over the weekend. This training provided them with essential skills to effectively respond to emergencies involving open water.

The course taught firefighters various techniques for reaching and rescuing individuals in water environments.

The training focused on methods that ensure the safety of both rescuers and victims in lakes, ponds, rivers, and other water bodies.

The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services explains that its Surface Water Rescue program includes skills such as self-rescue, reach-and-throw techniques, direct contact rescues, and boat-based operations.

These methods allow emergency personnel to prepare for water-related incidents while prioritizing safety for both responders and those in need.

The ten Cazenovia firefighters who finished the course are Barry Blanchard, Phil Byrnes, Chris Dascher, John Clarke, Kara Judd, Rick Macheda, Jeff Smith, Tom Swart, Ramiro Gutierrez, and Justin Norfleet.

Specialized water rescue training equips firefighters with practical abilities, enhances team coordination, and prepares them for emergencies that go beyond typical fireground operations.

This course further supports the department's continuous efforts to stay prepared for a variety of emergency situations in the Cazenovia area.
