This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

East Avon, NY — October 5 — The East Avon Fire Department carried out practical technical rescue training that focused on lifting, stabilizing, and safely reaching individuals who are trapped. Firefighters engaged in multiple scenarios using specialized rescue tools to prepare for situations such as vehicle collisions, structural failures, and other emergencies where people might be pinned or unable to escape.

During the training, members used equipment such as Holmatro struts, cable grip hoists, jacks, and cribbing.

They practiced selecting the appropriate tools for each situation, setting up secure lifting systems, and managing weight while creating access to a simulated victim.

The exercises helped reinforce important rescue techniques, including the use of mechanical advantage, load control, stabilization, and proper equipment handling.

Correct use of cribbing and stabilization helps prevent unnecessary movement while rescuers work around heavy or unstable objects. Effective planning and communication also help the team work together more efficiently and reduce the risks to both rescuers and the people they are helping.

The department provides emergency services to the Part Town of Avon Fire District, which covers about 38 square miles and a population of approximately 7,000 people. Its resources and tools are used to respond to a variety of emergency situations across the district.

Ongoing hands-on training helps firefighters become comfortable with rescue equipment before an actual emergency happens.

By practicing these procedures repeatedly, East Avon firefighters improved their ability to evaluate potential dangers, choose the right tools, and carry out controlled rescue operations when responding to incidents involving trapped individuals.
