Deposit, N.Y. Recently, firefighters and emergency medical services personnel from the Deposit Fire Department carried out a training exercise aimed at extracting an unconscious patient from an attic.

A department update posted on September 30 stated that the exercise occurred the prior week at the department’s training facility in Deposit. The crews responded to a simulated medical emergency in which an unconscious person had to be extracted from the attic.

The members started by evaluating the situation and reaching out to the patient. While the team looked for safe methods to remove the victim from the confined space, EMS providers continued to deliver medical care. The crews then chose and implemented a rescue plan to finish the removal.  The exercise tested communication and coordination between firefighters and EMS providers. Attic rescues can present challenges because of limited access, tight spaces, and the difficulty of moving a patient while maintaining safe handling and medical care.
