Phelps, N.Y. — September 28 — Members of the Oaks Corners and Phelps fire departments took part in FAST/RIT team training on September 28 at a structure that had been acquired within the Phelps Fire District.
The training emphasized the use of rapid intervention equipment and the procedures that are followed when firefighters need assistance during an emergency.
Firefighters from both departments used the equipment carried on their respective trucks and reviewed the operations of FAST/RIT teams.
They then carried out rescue drills inside a smoke-filled building.
These exercises allowed the firefighters to practice finding and removing a firefighter who had fallen during an operation, while working under conditions that required effective communication, team coordination, and controlled movement.
Additional members from fire, EMS, and auxiliary units also participated in rehabilitation team training.
They practiced deploying rehabilitation equipment and worked through the firefighter rehabilitation process after the rescue drills. The training covered the support needed to assess and assist firefighters after demanding operations.
The exercise offered an opportunity for the departments to train together and enhance coordination between rescue and rehabilitation functions.
The Oaks Corners Fire Department is also a fully volunteer department located at 607 Cross Road in Oaks Corners.
