Ionia, N.Y. — September 11 — The Ionia Volunteer Fire Company commemorated the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, by honoring the civilians and emergency responders who lost their lives during the attacks. The September 11 attacks resulted in the deaths of 2,977 people, including those in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania. At the World Trade Center, nearly 1,000 firefighters from the New York Fire Department (FDNY) responded to the incidents. In total, 343 FDNY firefighters and paramedics were killed. Additionally, 23 New York Police Department (NYPD) officers and 37 Port Authority Police officers also lost their lives.
The anniversary also paid tribute to the many responders who survived the attacks but later suffered long-term health issues related to their work at the World Trade Center site.
For members of the emergency services community, the day served as a solemn opportunity to remember those who responded, the civilians who were lost, and the families impacted by the attacks.
The Ionia Volunteer Fire Company is based at 8338 County Road 14 in Ionia.
The organization was established in 1954 and has continued to serve the community as a volunteer fire department.
Twenty-five years later, the September 11 anniversary remains a reminder of the duties and sacrifices made by firefighters, police officers, emergency medical services personnel, and other emergency workers.
The day was observed by remembering those who were lost and by acknowledging the ongoing service of those who continue to protect and serve.
