Osceola Mills, PA - Volunteer firefighters from the Columbia Volunteer Fire Company participated in a specialized, hands-on vehicle rescue evolution Monday evening in Clearfield County, partnering with commercial transit professionals to sharpen emergency response and passenger extrication tactics involving full-sized school buses.
On October 5, 2026, representatives Shane and Beth from Fullington Bus Company delivered an active passenger bus directly to the local fire station in Osceola Mills, allowing Clearfield County responders to engage in practical drills and detailed walkthroughs of commercial safety systems. Heightened focus on mass-transit safety follows an earlier school bus crash within Clearfield County at the start of the academic year, which prompted increased awareness and mutual safety initiatives across regional transport providers and first responder agencies.
During the drill, personnel reviewed corporate operating protocols established for motor vehicle accidents, ran coordinated scenario-based exercises, and gained direct experience operating built-in emergency infrastructure. Firefighters practiced manual operations for all emergency egress points, including rear escape doors, roof hatches, and side release windows, alongside procedures for manually opening jammed front entry doors.
Instruction also centered on vehicle stabilization and hazard mitigation, demonstrating proper procedures to safely terminate onboard electrical battery banks to prevent electrical fires or accidental system activations during rescue efforts. Crews additionally walked through protocols for establishing direct radio and telecommunications with bus dispatch centers during transit incidents to streamline information sharing and passenger accountability across Clearfield County.
Department leaders extended appreciation to Fullington Bus Company for providing the apparatus and expertise, commending participating members for expanding their tactical rescue knowledge.
