Wyoming, N.Y. — September 21 — Members of Wyoming Hook & Ladder Co.Inc.participated in training to learn how to use new Holmatro hydraulic extrication tools, which will help them during vehicle rescues and other technical emergency situations.
The department acquired two full sets of this equipment, each set containing a cutter, spreader, ram, and hydraulic pump.
Additionally, there were four core hydraulic lines connecting the two sets.
One set was given to Rescue 2, replacing an older extrication package that had been in use for around 25 years.
The other set was assigned to Engine 5, providing firefighters with another complete system for use in motor vehicle crashes and other rescue operations.
Holmatro is a company that makes hydraulic rescue tools used by fire and rescue departments for vehicle extrication.
Their equipment includes cutters, spreaders, rams, and pumps. The company's CORE hydraulic system uses a coaxial hose design, which allows tools to be changed without needing to activate a separate release valve on the pump.
The equipment was purchased from the Chester Fire Department in New Hampshire. Chester's department operates a Rescue 1 unit along with engines, tankers, and other specialized equipment.
The new tools have provided Wyoming firefighters with more extrication capabilities across two pieces of apparatus and have helped maintain the department’s readiness for mutual-aid responses.
