Wyoming, N.Y. — September 11 — Members of Wyoming Hook & Ladder Co.Inc.honored the lives lost during the September 11, 2001, attacks as the country observed the 25th anniversary of the event.
A total of 2,977 people died in the attacks, including 343 firefighters from the Fire Department of the City of New York, 23 officers from the New York City Police Department, and 37 officers from the Port Authority Police. Civilians, emergency workers, and others were among those killed at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and on Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The attacks prompted one of the largest emergency response and recovery efforts in U.S. history. Firefighters, police officers, emergency medical services personnel, and other responders worked at the affected sites for weeks following the attacks.
The impact of September 11 continued to be felt over the years. Thousands of responders and survivors later developed health issues linked to their exposure at the World Trade Center site. The World Trade Center Health Program continued to offer medical monitoring and treatment to eligible responders and survivors.
For the fire service, September 11 served as a constant reminder of the duties carried by emergency responders and the importance of training, teamwork, and readiness.
Twenty-five years later, Wyoming Hook & Ladder joined fire departments nationwide in remembering those who were lost and honoring the responders who served on that day.
