Richard Abbey Was Recognized for Service and Leadership

Middlesex, N.Y. — September 14 — The Middlesex Hose Company honored member Richard Abbey for his ongoing dedication to training, leadership, and service within the department and the broader community.


Abbey started his service with the Middlesex Hose Company on August 14, 2019, and began gaining experience in both firefighting and emergency medical services. In 2020, he successfully completed the Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations course and later earned the Firefighter I certification.


In 2022, Abbey became a certified First Responder through the New York State Fire Academy and completed training in rope rescue. That same year, he received the Service Beyond the Call Award for his contributions to the department and the community.


In 2024, Abbey furthered his knowledge in technical rescue by completing the New York State Fire Academy Rope Operations course and obtaining high-angle rescue certification. He then pursued additional training through a High Angle Rope Technician course, continuing to strengthen his expertise in technical rescue operations.


In 2023, Abbey was selected as one of the Middlesex Hose Company’s Firemen of the Year. This recognition highlighted his consistent efforts in training, responding to emergency calls, and assisting with departmental initiatives.


Abbey also held the roles of Assistant Chief and President of the Middlesex Hose Company, which involved responsibilities on both the operational and administrative levels of the organization.


His dedication to continuous learning and leadership exemplifies the commitment needed from volunteer emergency responders.
