— September 22, 2026 — On Tuesday evening, firefighters and EMS staff from three Butler County agencies teamed up for a tree stand rescue training exercise aimed at equipping crews to handle emergencies involving hunters in elevated positions.

Members from the Unionville Volunteer Fire Company, Butler Township Volunteer Fire District Station 3, and East Butler Volunteer Fire Companyspecifically Station 9 and Ambulance Station 44took part in the joint training.

The exercise took place before Pennsylvania’s fall hunting seasons and offered participants hands-on experience with various rescue techniques. Unionville Volunteer Fire Company reported that its members practiced various rescue scenarios, including safely lowering a patient from a high tree stand, building and using an A-frame ladder system, deploying rope and descent techniques, properly packaging patients, and addressing medical concerns during extrications.

The training also emphasized safe operation in elevated and challenging terrain. Such incidents often compel firefighters and EMS staff to operate around trees, ladders, ropes, and other gear while simultaneously attending to a patient who might be injured or in the midst of a medical emergency.
