Coeymans, N.Y. — September 12 — Members of Coeymans Fire Company #1 recently completed a New York State Fire Surface Water Rescue course that included both classroom learning and hands-on practice.

Firefighters from Coeymans Fire Company #1 participated alongside members from the Selkirk Fire Department and Coeymans Hollow Volunteer Fire Corp. This combined training allowed firefighters to collaborate with personnel from nearby departments while honing their water rescue abilities.

The course started with classroom sessions that covered essential knowledge required for surface water rescue missions.

Following this, firefighters moved to the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District pool to engage in practical exercises.

The training ended with five hours of hands-on practice in the Hudson River. This river segment enabled firefighters to use the skills they learned in the classroom and at the pool in a real-world, open-water environment.

Surface water rescue training prepares emergency responders for incidents involving individuals in rivers, lakes, and other water bodies.

As part of its broader initiatives to enhance firefighter and technical rescue capabilities, New York State Fire training includes water rescue instruction.

Additionally, the joint training offered participating departments the chance to improve coordination and practice teamwork during water rescue scenarios.
