Mount Laurel, N.J. — September 21 — The Mount Laurel Fire Department welcomed six new career firefighters who were sworn in during the Board of Fire Commissioners meeting on September 21.
The new members were Curt VanMater Jr., Nicholas Pica, James Carruthers, Thomas Flaherty, John Horn Jr. and Angelo Ventresca. Following the swearing-in ceremony, the firefighters began a six-week in-house training program before being assigned to their permanent positions.
The department operated from 69 Elbo Lane and provided fire protection and emergency services throughout Mount Laurel Township. The township's fire service operated as a combination department, with career and volunteer personnel working together to provide emergency response.
Initial training for new career firefighters covered department procedures, equipment, emergency response operations and other skills needed for fire and rescue assignments. The in-house period also gave new members an opportunity to become familiar with local buildings, apparatus and operating procedures before joining their assigned crews.
The addition of six career firefighters strengthened the department's staffing as members prepared for their permanent assignments. The new firefighters were also supported by department personnel, commissioners, family members and community members who attended the swearing-in ceremony.
The September 21 ceremony marked the beginning of the firefighters' careers with Mount Laurel Fire Department as they continued their training and prepared to serve the township.
