Tri-County Fire Company Mourns Past Chief Phil Hammel

The Tri-County Volunteer Fire Company is grieving the passing of Past Chief Philip E. “ Phil” Hammel, who died on August 31, 2026, at his residence in Hackettstown. He was 76 years old. 


According to the department’s announcement, Hammel served the Tri-County Volunteer Fire Company for many years and held the position of chief in 1986 and 1987. His service was part of a longstanding history of community engagement in the Hackettstown and Mansfield Township area. 


Hammel was also an educator for many years. His obituary notes that he devoted over 40 years to education and lived in Hackettstown for most of his life. 


The fire company announced that visitation will be held October 3 at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 213 Main Street, Hackettstown. The church has been used for memorial and funeral services for members of the local community.
