West Windsor, N.J. — September 8 — A longstanding tradition at West Windsor Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 has come back to the firehouse with a new mission.
The company has reintroduced its “ Lightning Rack,” a designated gear area positioned at the front of the apparatus bay, close to the Chief Officers. The fire company stated that the rack was traditionally used to honor members who regularly answered calls, took part in training, and were dependable to both their fellow firefighters and the community.
The reactivated Lightning Rack has been formally dedicated in honor of Chief Emeritus Vernon Roszel, who led the department from 1960 to 1980, as announced by the department. The Historical Society of West Windsor also records Roszel's service with the company. A 1996 historical account noted that Roszel was a life member and former chief, having served as chief for two decades after joining the company in 1941.
As part of the dedication, Roszel’s photograph was positioned above the rack, accompanied by a special chief’s front piece. The gear spaces below are meant to honor current members whose service and responsiveness have earned them a spot on the rack.
