Wildwood, N.J. — September 23 — The Wildwood Fire Department commemorated the 74th anniversary of the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Charles Bonner, who lost his life on September 23, 1952, after a fire at Ken’s Bowldrome located at the intersection of Rio Grande and Pacific avenues. The department continued to honor Bonner as part of its historical records and tribute to fallen members.
Bonner began his service with the Holly Beach Fire Company on February 11, 1924, and was later transferred to the Municipal Fire Division in November 1938.
Department records noted that he was actively involved in fire company activities and was also a member of the Hereford Masonic Lodge.
The fire took place on September 22, 1952, and affected both Ken’s Bowldrome and Locke’s Cigar Store.
A major explosion caused significant structural damage to the front of the bowling alley. Bonner, who had been receiving medical attention prior to the incident, suffered a stroke while responding to the fire and was sent home. He was later taken to the hospital, where he passed away the next day.
Bonner was survived by two sons, two daughters, and a sister. His name remains listed among the Wildwood Fire Department’s line-of-duty deaths and the Cape May County Firemen’s Association’s LODD records. The Wildwood Fire Department operated from 4400 New Jersey Avenue and continues to honor Bonner's service and memory.
