Rio Grande, N.J. — September 11 — The Rio Grande Fire Company commemorated the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by honoring the civilians and emergency responders who lost their lives that day.
For those in the fire service, the anniversary remained deeply connected to the 343 FDNY firefighters who lost their lives while responding to the attacks at the World Trade Center.
The FDNY also continued to honor members who later passed away due to illnesses linked to their work at the World Trade Center site.
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum stated that a total of 2,983 people were killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks and the February 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
The 25th anniversary included the recitation of victims' names and a new seventh moment of silence for those who died from 9/11-related illnesses or injuries.
The anniversary also acknowledged the ongoing role of emergency service workers in remembering and educating others about the events of September 11. The 9/11 Memorial noted that approximately 100 million Americans were too young to remember the attacks, making education a vital part of the commemoration.
The Rio Grande Fire Company, located at 1120 Route 47 South, continued to provide service to the Rio Grande community while honoring the fire service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
