Sharpening the Tools: Roseland Firefighters Practice Advanced Forcible Entry and Heavy Rigging

Roseland, NJ - Firefighters with the Roseland Volunteer Fire Department dedicated their bi-monthly drill night Tuesday to intensive, hands-on training with specialized heavy-rescue and cutting equipment, reinforcing critical skills utilized in forcible entry, technical rescue, and structural firefighting.

Conducted on the first and fourth Tuesday of every month, the department's drill sessions serve as structured practical evolutions designed to maintain high-level operational readiness across the volunteer roster. During the September 1 session, personnel divided into two operational details to undergo in-depth technical instruction and tool familiarization.

Crews focused heavily on rotary and power-cutting tools, working with both gas-powered and modern battery-operated K12 rescue saws equipped with abrasive metal-cutting and carbide-tipped wood blades. In addition to rotary saws, members drilled on stationary band saw applications and heavy-rigging mechanics utilizing manual grip-hoist systems used to move and stabilize substantial structural loads or disabled vehicles.

Following the initial instructional phase, each member was evaluated individually, demonstrating safe handling procedures, starting techniques, operational proficiency, and blade maintenance standards. Department leadership emphasized that frequent, practical exposure to specialized tool complements ensures rapid, reliable, and safe intervention during complex emergencies throughout the borough.
