Dummerston Firefighters Honored Those Lost on September 11

Dummerston, VT — September 11 — The Dummerston Fire Department commemorated the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks by honoring the civilians and emergency workers who were tragically lost that day.

The attacks resulted in the deaths of 2,977 individuals at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania.

Among those who perished were 343 firefighters from the Fire Department of New York, 37 officers from the Port Authority Police Department, and 23 officers from the New York Police Department, representing the greatest loss of rescue workers in U.S.history.

The anniversary also acknowledged the numerous first responders who worked at the three locations during the rescue, recovery, and relief efforts.

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum highlighted that the consequences of the attacks continued to affect many responders in the form of illnesses and other health issues in the years that followed.

At the Dummerston Fire Department, located at 1049 East-West Road, the observance was a chance to honor the service and sacrifices of firefighters, police officers, EMTs, paramedics, and other emergency personnel who responded on September 11 and during the recovery period.

The 25th anniversary was also marked across the nation with a ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in New York, where family members read the names of those who were killed in the 2001 attacks.

Seven moments of silence were held to remember significant events that morning and those who later died as a result of 9/11-related injuries or illnesses.

The Dummerston department’s observance focused on remembrance, service, and the enduring significance of the emergency services community’s response.
