East Montpelier Fire Department Remembered Those Lost on 9/11

East Montpelier, VT — September 11 — The East Montpelier Fire Department commemorated the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks by honoring the civilians, firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel, and other responders who lost their lives that day.

The attacks resulted in the deaths of 2,977 people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Emergency services personnel faced significant losses.According to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, 343 Fire Department of New York (FDNY) firefighters, 37 Port Authority Police Department officers, and 23 New York City Police Department officers perished in the attacks.

Approximately 1,000 firefighters and around 2,000 police officers were deployed to the World Trade Center, with over 100 ambulances sent within the first hour.

This response marked the largest emergency mobilization in New York City's history.

The impact of September 11 extended far beyond the immediate aftermath.

Tens of thousands of rescue, recovery, and relief workers were involved at the three main sites, and many were exposed to harmful dust and debris during the cleanup process.

For the East Montpelier Fire Department, based at 54 Village Acres, the anniversary served as a moment to reflect on those who were lost, to acknowledge the value of service, teamwork, and community support.

The department observed September 11 as a day of remembrance for those who responded, those who were affected, and those whose lives were forever changed by the attacks.
