Hawthorne, NY - Firefighters from the Hawthorne Fire Department dedicated Friday to intensive technical rescue training, focusing on low-angle rope systems and patient transport across steep, challenging terrain in central Westchester County.

On September 18, department personnel participated in hands-on scenarios designed to simulate real-world rescues involving injured hikers, motorists ejected down embankments, or individuals stranded on irregular, sloped ground inaccessible to standard wheeled stretchers.

The training evolutions placed heavy emphasis on constructing mechanical advantage rope systems, deploying anchor points, and properly applying webbing to ensure complete system redundancy. Firefighters practiced packaging a simulated patient securely into a rescue litter (Stokes basket), coordinating haul teams, and managing edge transitions with precise team-wide communication.

Department leadership noted that while low-angle rope setups may appear straightforward from the outside, operating on the line requires seamless coordination, disciplined rigging checks, and consistent practice to ensure rapid, safe extractions when an emergency call comes in.
