Driver Training and Coastal Hazard Mapping Highlight Mastic Beach Smith Point Exercise

Mastic Beach, NY - Despite persistent rain and adverse coastal conditions, firefighters and marine specialists from the Mastic Beach Fire Department deployed an extensive convoy of specialized off-road and high-water vehicles Sunday to conduct a rigorous beach-access training drill across Smith Point County Park.

On September 20, department personnel took advantage of the stormy conditions to evaluate operational readiness along the dynamic coastal terrain of the barrier beach. The exercise saw crews maneuver apparatus down Burma Road toward the Moriches Inlet, testing traction, vehicle clearance, and real-time handling along soft oceanfront corridors under wet weather.

Beyond proving the mechanical endurance of the district’s specialized response assets, the evolution served as vital terrain familiarization for newer apparatus operators. Firefighters mapped current sand migration, documented seasonal shoreline shifts, and evaluated critical shoreline entry points, ensuring emergency drivers retain essential spatial awareness when dispatched to offshore rescues, brush emergencies, or stranded vessels.

The specialized convoy deployed for the Sunday evolution featured a substantial portion of the department's severe-weather and maritime fleet, including the Gator utility vehicle, 4-Wheel-Drive Engine 8, Rescue 7 (4-wheel-drive marine rescue truck), Marine 1 (marine rescue pickup), and high-water military-surplus units GI 10 and GI 11.

Department leadership emphasized that operating in rough surfside environments requires constant training and mechanical familiarity, noting that navigating shifting dunes and waterlogged trails during inclement drills directly translates into faster response times during critical coastal emergencies.
