September 1, 2025 — Over the weekend, Barnegat Light Volunteer Fire Company #1 received the heartbreaking news of the passing of Mayor Kirk O. Larson. A life member of the fire company, Mayor Larson served over 15 years as an active firefighter and past engineer, and he has long been a dedicated supporter of both the department and the town.

Mayor Larson regularly swore in officers at the company’s installation dinners and leaves a legacy of service that continues through his son, Kirk Jr., the department’s current engineer.

The fire company expressed heartfelt condolences to the Larson family and emphasized the importance of coming together as a community to honor his life. Purple and black mourning bunting has been displayed, a traditional symbol in the first responder community signifying respect, remembrance, and the impact of the individual on those around them.
