Patient Airlifted After Rescue From Willington Woods

Willington, Conn. — September 7 — On Monday morning, a person with severe injuries was recovered by emergency personnel from a heavily forested region close to the train tracks off Route 32, often known as River Road.

A patient with traumatic injuries was reported at around 11:05 a.m. in the vicinity of the 200 block of Route 32. In addition to Windham Hospital paramedics, Connecticut State Police, and LIFE STAR, Willington Fire Department No. 1 and Willington Hill Fire Department also responded.

The patient was found by firefighters in a densely forested region close to the railroads. With the help of a utility terrain vehicle owned by a local citizen, firefighters extracted the patient from the woods so they could get to the medical supplies that were waiting for them.

The patient was then airlifted by LIFE STAR to a Hartford-area hospital. Connecticut State Police confirmed that the person suffered a serious injury, but officials did not release additional information about the patient's condition or how the injuries occurred. Police also confirmed the call was not classified as a motor vehicle crash.

The University of Connecticut Fire Department was initially requested to provide additional manpower but was redirected to another incident in Willington. Later, Willington Fire was dispatched to a third medical emergency in town, requiring Stafford Ambulance Association to respond.

The response involved two of Willington's fire departments. The town's emergency-services information confirms that both Willington Fire Department Station #13 and Willington Hill Fire Department serve the community.
