Hands-On Fire Safety and First Aid: Dryden Concludes Successful Summer Program for Young Recruits

DRYDEN, NY — Young community members gained hands-on experience in fire suppression, emergency medical services, and lifesaving fundamentals on Saturday as the Dryden Fire Department concluded the first session of its summer youth program, the Junior Fire Academy.

On August 22, Neptune Hose Co. 1 of Dryden and Dryden Ambulance wrapped up an engaging instructional session tailored for local youths aged 8 to 11. The program introduced participants to the multifaceted responsibilities of modern first responders, combining interactive safety education with practical fireground and EMS demonstrations.

Throughout the session, attendees learned proper techniques for handling fire hoses, navigating safe simulated smoke conditions, operating portable fire extinguishers, and recognizing emergency scene safety during vehicle accident scenarios. In addition to suppression skills, instructors guided the group through core medical proficiencies, including dialing 911 effectively, performing basic first aid and CPR, and understanding essential patient care practices in the back of an ambulance.

The academy balanced rigorous training with engaging team-building exercises, featuring traditional bucket brigade competitions and water evolutions that allowed participants to cool off while experiencing authentic firefighting heritage.

Department organizers commended the enthusiasm and dedication of the young attendees, expressing hope that the immersive experience will inspire several participants to step up as the next generation of volunteer firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and paramedics serving the Dryden community.
